Dr. McCarty has been on the forefront of innovation in bariatric procedures. His extensive experience and knowledge allow him to help patients at all stages of their weight loss journey.

McCarty Weight Loss Center (formerly Lakewood Weight Loss and Wellness) strives to provide a diverse spectrum of treatment options tailored to the individual patient in an environment of knowledgeable and caring staff. The following surgical and non-surgical weight loss options are available to patients at McCarty Weight Loss Center.

Weight Loss Surgeries

McCarty Mini Sleeve

A minimally invasive surgical technique that uses natural entrances to the abdominal cavity to avoid the many painful incisions through the abdominal wall that are often required with standard laparoscopy. Benefits of the McCarty Mini Sleeve include less pain, lower risk for complications, faster recovery times, few scars and no hospital stay. Patients can expect to experience the same weight loss as with the laparoscopic sleeve procedure.

Gastric Bypass

Long considered the “Gold Standard” of weight loss operations, this procedure creates a small stomach pouch that’s then reconnected to the small intestine. The stomach is reduced from about the size of a football to the size of a lemon. The remainder of the stomach is “bypassed” along with the first port of the small intestine, restricting food portions and limiting intestinal absorption. Patients who undergo this procedure lose an average of 60 to 70 percent of excess body fat, with the majority of weight loss occurring in the first six months. In 2005, Dr. McCarty established the nationwide standard of care for laparoscopic gastric bypass.

Gastric Banding

In this procedure, an adjustable, silicon inflatable band is placed around the upper stomach, connected by tubing to an access port placed under the surface of the skin. The band can be adjusted in size by injecting fluid into the system when accessed through the port. Gastric banding works to restrict the volume of food entering the stomach. The procedure is reversible and requires no intestinal routing. Patients who undergo gastric banding can expect to lose 20 to 40 percent of their excess body weight.

Non-Surgical Services

Body Contouring

Weight loss surgery results in dramatic weight loss, often leaving patients with loose, wrinkled, sagging skin. Body contouring is an aesthetic procedure to help the patient achieve their desired shape. Body contouring treatments range from abdominoplasty to minimally invasive solutions such as SmartLipo, ThermiTight, ThermiSmooth, laser skin resurfacing and anti-wrinkle treatments, among others. McCarty Weight Loss Center has teamed with Lakewood Aesthetics to offer the latest in minimally invasive and non-invasive body contouring options.

Body Composition Analysis

Weight and BMI are not the only factors in assessing the presence of obesity. It is necessary to determine the specific amount of lean muscle mass and fat mass to more accurately diagnose obesity and recommend treatment. A body composition analysis can provide the information needed to help a patient with a BMI under 35 get insurance approval for surgery. Body composition analysis also helps determine the amount of fat that can be targeted for weight loss.

Metabolic Testing

Measuring a patient’s Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is essential to help them achieve their short- and long-term weight loss goals. Their ideal metabolic rate is determined based on weight, height, gender and age and then compared to the patient’s metabolic rate precisely measured in our clinic. This helps us design the most effective dietary and exercise regimen for our patients. This information also allows us to complete a proper evaluation of underlying medical conditions that can slow your metabolic rate.

Nutritional Counseling

Eating healthy shouldn’t be a barrier to your long-term health and wellness. Our nutritional counseling programs and pre-packaged meal options take the guesswork out of proper nutrition. We fully evaluate a patient’s caloric requirements, medical history and cardiovascular health and provide a very specific dietary recommendation to help the patient achieve their goal. We work with patients to find an approach to nutrition that is sensible and enjoyable.

Surgical Support Services

Long-term success following weight loss surgery is more likely when it’s coupled with a healthy support system. McCarty Weight Loss Center offers nutritional guidance, exercise physiology and certified fitness training as well as enlightening psychological insight to help our surgery patients achieve optimum success. We have a well-organized support group, exercise group, Facebook and Twitter pages and regular meetings to discuss the role food plays in our lives.

Weight Loss Medications

We use a variety of medications to help patients achieve optimal weight loss. The choice of medication is determined by each patient’s medical history, risk assessment and side effect profile. Though there are many options, we’ll find the right combination to help patients optimize weight loss while reducing the risk of side effects.

Weight Regain Support

It’s not uncommon to regain some weight in the long term following weight loss surgery, and we understand this is a frustrating experience. To address this challenge, we offer a unique and innovative approach to help patients get back on track with their weight loss. We focus on the emotional complexity associated with eating and assess medical or anatomic causes for weight gain, including testing metabolic rate, body composition, dietary and exercise habits and anatomy of the individual.
