Weight Loss Surgeries in Dallas

Gastric Banding

Gastric Banding has been a common weight loss operation for bariatric surgery over the past several years, although its popularity is fading. While non-adjustable bands had been used in the distant past these were subsequently replaced with adjustable bands that are performed laparoscopically. While different versions of the adjustable band are available, they all work on the same principle. The band is wrapped around the upper stomach to create a small pouch (~30cc) and is attached to a catheter so fluid can be injected to expand the band as needed. The catheter is attached to a small access port that sits under the skin of the abdominal wall. The band can be “adjusted” as necessary to accommodate each patient. Difficulty tolerating healthy foods such as meat and vegetables, combined with persistent hunger, can lead to unhealthy food choices such as chips, candy, ice cream and other soft foods that limit weight loss. A significant number of patients will eventually have the band removed.

Gastric Bypass

Long considered the “Gold Standard” of weight loss operations, a Gastric Bypass procedure creates a small stomach pouch that is reconnected to the small intestine. The stomach is reduced from about the size of a football to the size of a lemon, or 30-cc. The remainder of the stomach is “bypassed” along with the first port of the small intestine. This results in reduced volume of food that can be ingested and limits intestinal absorption. Thus, it is considered a restrictive and malabsorptive operation, and supplemental calcium, iron and vitamin B12 are needed. Recent advance with the gastric sleeve operation have decreased the popularity of gastric bypass, particularly the Mini Sleeve that can be performed with fewer risks, faster recovery, improved long term outcomes and with little need for vitamin or micronutrient supplements.

Surgical Revisions

Put simply, the “perfect” weight loss operation does not exist nor has it ever. All weight loss operations have limitations and weight regain can occur for a variety of reasons. If this has happened in your life we want you to realize that you are not alone, you haven’t “failed” and help is available. In addition, much has been learned about weight regain over the past few years and effective treatment options are now available.
